Jesus repeatedly taught his disciples the importance of putting others before themselves. If we want to be Jesus’ disciples we have to do the same. Becoming people who live for God and others is exactly what we are trying to instill in our students. This is so important that we cancel classes for a day to be of service to the community in our annual work-a-thon above and beyond the service our students regularly perform. Faculty, staff, and parents are also involved in the day as we help at thirty agencies in the greater-Lansing area. Parents and alumni who wish to volunteer for the work-a-thon should contact Mr.Moore at 267-2115 or by email at moore at lansingcatholic.org.
Ten hours of Christian service must be completed by every student each semester they are at Lansing Catholic. Service needs to be done with an agency that has as its purpose serving the needy in our area. Anything that benefits the school, a team a student belongs to, or one’s self does not constitute service. Helping a family member in need, although very important to do, is NOT Christian service either.
Only five hours of athletics-related service is allowed per school year. Athletics–related service includes but is not limited to summer camps, coaching, working game clocks, etc. Service that an athletic team does for an agency such as Advent House is not considered athletic-related service.
Service done over the summer does count toward the first semester requirement only.
Proper documentation of service is required. A covenant that is filled out and signed BEFORE you do your service is due ten school days after the start of the quarter. Dates for the 2011-12 school year are: first semester – September 9, second semester – February 7. Service evaluations are due roughly ten days prior to the end of the semester: first semester - January 6, second semester – May 18 (April 26 for seniors). Click this link for the SERVICE COVENANT and this link for a copy of the SERVICE EVALUATION.
A parent should not sign as the supervisor. If your parent is the supervisor at a community event, please have another adult that can verify your participation sign the form. The goal here is to serve others, not help out family members for Christian service.
